Everybody is talking about AI, but who is discussing AI for 6G Communications? And even more importantly, who is exploring AI for 6G Communications in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria?
During 2.5 days, the IEEE Signal Processing Society hosted an exceptional Winter School, bringing together students, researchers, and industry experts to delve into the future of AI-driven 6G networks. This unique event provided an opportunity to engage in tutorial-style presentations and hands-on sessions, focusing on the critical intersection of Artificial Intelligence and mobile networking.
Exploring Key Challenges in AI for 6G
Among the many thought-provoking sessions, our postdoc, José González Cabañas, took the stage to highlight two major challenges facing AI-driven systems: privacy concerns and the environmental footprint of AI-powered tools. His talk, “The Costs of AI in Daily Life: Privacy and Sustainability,” explored the often-overlooked consequences of widespread AI adoption, shedding light on the balance between innovation and responsible technology use.

IEEE SPS 1st Winter School on AI for 6G Communications
Aim and Scope
This Winter School had a twofold objective:
- Understanding Enabling Technologies
- Providing students with a comprehensive understanding of key technologies and research challenges in the evolution of 6G networks.
- Focusing on the convergence of AI and its application to cloud and edge computing.
- Covering essential topics such as network programming, distributed systems, orchestration, virtualization, and machine learning applications in networking.
- Addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of network sensing, edge intelligence, AI-driven networking, and the design of disaggregated, programmable networks.
- Hands-On Experience with Cutting-Edge Research Tools
- Introducing students to the latest tools and methodologies supported by UNICO I+D projects like 6G-CLARION, 6G-RIEMANN, SORUS, EDGEDT, and DATADRIVEN.
- Hosting dedicated sessions that provided firsthand experience with state-of-the-art research tools.
As AI continues to revolutionize the way we interact with technology, the discussions at this Winter School reaffirmed the importance of responsible innovation. Privacy, sustainability, and efficiency are at the heart of AI’s role in shaping next-generation networks, and we’re excited to be part of this groundbreaking journey.
